| Not so much a region,
more a different world - More than any other Spanish region, Catalunya
has its own unique cultural identity. Its people speak Catalan -
a mixture of French and Castilian and the distinctiveness is epitomised
by the quirky architecture of Gaudi, the surrealism of Dali and
through the richly varied countryside and coastline. From the strange
volcanic landscape of the Garrotxa region and the dramatic mountains
and waterfalls of Lleida, to the rugged beauty of the Costa Brava,
Catalunya will create some unforgettable memories that will linger
- long after you return home.
Dont miss - Barcelona is a must. See
the splendid eccentric architecture of Antoni Gaudi - Typified by
the citys cathedral whose eight towering spires are over 100 metres
high. This theme of eccentricity continues at Figueres and the Museu
Dali - a building as surreal as the works of art it houses! South
of Barcelona, you'll find Tarragona - a fortified city with many
fascinating Roman remains including the Necropolis, Forum and Amphitheatre.
Things to do - The Costa Dorada and
Costa Brava offer the contrasts of sweeping sandy beaches or secluded
rocky coves. For a great family day out, the Port Aventura Theme
park near Salou, must not be missed. Drive a little inland to La
Bisbal - this medieval market town has specialised in ceramics since
the 17th century - a great place to buy presents to take home. Be
sure to try cremat - a traditional drink of the Catalan fishing
villages. Rum based, Cremat is served in a large earthenware bowl,
set alight and stirred (not shaken) for a few minutes. Visit LEscala
- famous for its anchovies - perfect for a tasty souvenir. Here
you can take a beach bar and watch the sardana - a Catalan folk
dance (held on the seafront every Wednesday evening during July
and August). |
